Nyerere National Park: Tanzania’s Largest Wildlife Sanctuary and Safari Secret

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s largest and most remarkable safari destinations, covering approximately 30,000 square kilometres in the southeastern part of the country. Named in honour of Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere, the park forms part of the greater Selous ecosystem and offers an extraordinary wilderness experience away from the crowds. Its diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and unique safari activities make it an ideal destination for authentic African adventures.

Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park

The best time to visit Nyerere National Park is from June to October, during the dry season. Wildlife viewing is excellent as animals gather around the Rufiji River and other remaining water sources. The vegetation is also thinner, making it easier to spot animals during game drives and boat safaris.

The green season, from November to May, offers beautiful green landscapes and excellent birdwatching opportunities, although some roads may become difficult to access during heavy rains.

High Season in Nyerere National Park

The high season in Nyerere National Park is from June to October, with July, August, and September being the peak visitor months. This period attracts more safari travellers because of the dry weather and excellent wildlife-viewing conditions.
