Trekking Overview

Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a stunning trek for adventurers seeking a shorter, quieter, and scenic climb. The hike offers incredible views of Arusha National Park, rich wildlife, and a rewarding summit experience at Socialist Peak.

 


Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut

• Elevation: 1,500m to 2,500m
• Duration: 5–6 hours

Highlights:

  • Transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate.

  • Registration and meet your armed ranger (required due to wildlife).

  • Trek through forests with possible sightings of giraffes, buffalo, antelopes, and monkeys.

  • Enjoy lunch on the trail.

  • Arrive at Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.


Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut

• Elevation: 2,500m to 3,500m
• Duration: 3–4 hours

Highlights:

  • Steady climb through montane forest and open heath.

  • Reach Saddle Hut located below Little Meru.

  • Optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for sunset.

  • Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.


Day 3: Saddle Hut – Summit (Socialist Peak, 4,566m) – Miriakamba Hut

• Elevation: 3,500m to 4,566m (Summit), descend to 2,500m
• Duration: 10–12 hours

Highlights:

  • Early midnight start for the summit push.

  • Challenging hike along a narrow ridge with spectacular views.

  • Reach Socialist Peak at sunrise—panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and Meru Crater.

  • Descend back to Saddle Hut for breakfast.

  • Continue down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.


Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Arusha

• Elevation: 2,500m to 1,500m
• Duration: 2–3 hours

Highlights:

  • Descend through forest and scenic landscapes.

  • Return to Momella Gate for certificate and pickup.

  • Drive back to Arusha.
